Hunter Creek Fire

Patterson volunteer firefighter Dallas Hernandez is first to put water on the flames of this working structure fire that occurred July 5 of 2014 on Hunter Creek Drive in the Walker Ranch housing subdivision. This photo taken by the Irrigator's Elias Funez, is among four award winning entries to be recognized by the California Newspaper Publishers Association's annual Better Newspapers Contest.

Staff of the Patterson Irrigator received notice last week that they will be receiving four awards from the annual California Newspaper Publishers Association’s Better Newspapers Contest for 2014.

The notification explained that the awards are for either first or second place in the following categories: News Photo, Photo Essay, Investigative Reporting, and Sports Story.

Whether or not a first- or second-place designation will be awarded will not be revealed until after the awards ceremony takes place, scheduled for May 9, on Coronado Island in San Diego.

Placing in the Sports Story category, Irrigator sports reporter Erick Torres’ July 3 story titled "Hansen overcomes obstacles to row, joins U.S.A. Paralympic rowing team" highlights the trials and tribulations of Patterson’s Dani Hansen and her quest to represent the U.S. as a Paralympian.

PI editor Elias Funez’s June 5 story titled "Health Care District terminates Hurd, hires interim replacement" will receive an award in the Investigative Reporting category.

A photo taken by Funez of a working structure fire that occurred on Hunter Creek Drive July 5 will receive an award in the News Photo category, while a Photo Essay from the July 30 article titled "Hotshots come to Patterson’s aid", also by Funez, will also receive an award.
