25 Years Ago – May 31, 1994

Retired electrical contractor Walt Catalano, his fellow Rotarians and volunteers have completely rewired South Park for use by Apricot Fiesta food booths.

Las Palmas School volunteer Beatrice Aguirre and high school teacher Gene Field have been awarded the annual School Bell awards. Josh Steager has won the Best of Show honor in the Patterson High School art show. He also won the Best of Show award in last year’s Apricot Fiesta Arts and Crafts Contest.

Burt Smith of Patterson has received the Boy Scout Award of Merit, the highest honor given adult volunteers at the district level. He has been a volunteer with local Troop 81 for 15 years.

50 Years Ago – May 29, 1969

Manuel Mendes has been awarded the Dekalb Agricultural Award for outstanding students in vocational agriculture. He has also earned the FFA’s State Farmer Degree.

Jerry Hayton, a PHS grad, will graduate next week from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Manuel Panarra has been honored with a surprise dinner for his six years as a volunteer coach at Sacred Heart School.

Army Pvt. Grant Craven of Patterson has been assigned to infantry duty in Vietnam.

High School senior Dave Wheeland placed second in championship play at the Turlock Golf and Country Club. The winner was a member of San Jose State’s Golf team.

75 Years Ago – June 2, 1944

One of the major real estate transactions of the season is the acquisition of 130 acres of orchard and vineyard property by Vincent Traina of San Jose.

Robert Densmore was one of the student speakers at high school graduation Friday night, and thought he had an extreme case of nervousness. But after the ceremony he was hauled off to Modesto for an appendicitis operation.

Mary Martins has been awarded the W.W. Cox scholarship at the high school graduation ceremony. It is given annually for scholarship, leadership and citizenship.

A weekly column by nationally-noted war correspondent Ernie Pyle is now appearing in the Irrigator.

Two more local men have been inducted into military service: William Azevedo of Westley has joined the Navy, and Martin Tabar of Patterson, the Army.

Sgt. Edward Hammon, now in Florida, is preparing to be transferred overseas.
