The Del Puerto Health Care District has welcomed new medical director Dr. Jose Rodriguez to its health center at 1700 Keystone Pacific Parkway.

Rodriguez, 50, follows doctors Dr. David Hilburn and Ali Wahid in the position and formally started at the center Jan. 2.

Rodriguez will oversee the day-to-day operations of the health center and supervise the staff, including nurse practitioners and physician assistants, and he’ll work on increasing patient load. He has been working on Fridays at the center since the fall.

“I’m really excited to be a part of the Del Puerto Health Care District medical practice system and look forward to taking care of the whole community,” Rodriguez said.

He added that the health center has to have the volume of patients before family medicine services can expand.

“First, I have to make sure that we build up the clientele base,” Rodriguez said. “Second, I have to make sure the clinic is providing excellent care, which it has been in the past.

After that, once we have a full patient load, some needs will arise and hopefully we can provide those services if the board agrees and finances allow.”

Besides Rodriguez, right now the medical staff includes doctors Elaine Davenport, Eugene Lamazor and Diana Blythe, as well as Christine Cavanaugh, a nurse practitioner and Heather Clayton-Young, a physician assistant.

Modesto-area cardiologists come in to the center once a month, and center staff hopes to add more hours for more doctors, as well as for radiology and for ultrasound services if the patient volume supports it.

Anne Stokman, president of the Del Puerto Health Care District board and a registered nurse, said she is glad Rodriguez is on board.

“I’ve known Dr. Rodriguez for over 20 years—he has practiced in the Modesto area,” Stokman said. “He is a wonderful addition to our clinic. He’s what we really need to expand into the future. Dr. Rodriguez also has an intense experience with treating diabetes.”

Rodriguez, who speaks both English and Spanish, sees patients at the health center Monday through Thursday from 9 5 p.m. and during other hours does administrative duties.

He has practiced medicine at the Hughson Medical Office, and he is also the Stanislaus Chapter California Academy of Family Physicians president, serving on that board for the past seven years.

Additionally, Rodriguez has served as an executive committee member of the Stanislaus Family Medical group for the past eight years, and before that he served a three-year stint from 2000 to 2003.

Rodriguez is a University of California, Davis, Medical Affiliated Associate, a clinical professor of family medicine and a University of California, Davis, Stanford University P.A./N. P.  Preceptor.

He has been a partner in the Scenic Faculty Medical Group since 1998, being in a leadership position for many of those years. The doctors in the group teach family medicine to residents, see a wide diversity of patients and provide outpatient care to those in need.

Rodriguez, who graduated from the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine in 1993, had his internship and residency at Stanislaus Medical Center in Modesto from 1993 to 1996. He lives in Modesto with his wife, son and two daughters and enjoys golf and tennis.

The Del Puerto Health Care District, which replaced the Del Puerto Hospital District in 1998, provides local health care services through Patterson District Ambulance Co. and the Del Puerto Health Center.
