Graveside services are pending for Frank Varela, a lifelong Banta resident, who died unexpectedly Dec. 31 at the age of 81.

Mr. Varela attended Banta School and Tracy High School. He worked at the Holly Sugar mill for a time and retired after many years at the Tracy defense depot. He also served two years in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include two sisters, Elvera Rotherham and Marie Tate, and her husband, Melvon, all of Tracy; a brother, Henry Varela, and his wife, Mary, of Manteca; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his father and mother, Juan and Catherine Varela; and two brothers, Robert and Conrad Varela.

A memorial service was held Friday. Burial will follow at a later date in Little Arlington at the Tracy Cemetery, 501 E. Schulte Road.
