Stanislaus County has begun the selection process for its 2016-17 civil grand jury.

Prospective jurors interested in serving can contact the grand jury office at 558-7766 or download the application form online.

The application deadline is April 30. Civil grand jurors must be available at least 20 hours a week and meet the same qualifications as trial jurors.

Civil grand jurors – whose function is to serve as “watchdogs” by investigating and reporting on the affairs of local governmental agencies – serve for one year, from July 1 to June 30. Those agencies subject to investigation include city and county governments, school districts and special districts.

Applicants who qualify will be interviewed by a Stanislaus County Superior Court judge and assistant court executive officer. Marie Sovey Silveira, presiding judge of the superior court, will select 30 finalists out of the pool of interviewees.

In open court June 27, a random selection process will determine the 19-member civil grand jury and four alternates – chosen from the 30 finalists.
