A pair of Patterson locals has taken up a love for the sport of gymnastics, and in only their first year competing out of Classic Gymnastics in Tracy, have found success competing at local, state and regional level tournaments.

Claire Pierce, 11, and McKenzie Cousins, 12, commute to Tracy three days a week, putting in four-hour practice sessions at the Classic Gymnastic gym.

Their newfound attraction to the sport has led to a dedication to gymnastics. Pierce and Cousins have immersed themselves in the scene by competing in tournaments. This journey has taken both to competitions tournaments as far as the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, or most recently, the 2018 Region 1 Xcel Championships held at Salt Lake City, Utah on the weekend of April 20.

Both athletes have competed in the Xcel Gold category in their first competitive season, and both have enjoyed success.

As an individual, Pierce finished in fourth place in the all-around category at the 2018 Regional 1 Xcel Championships XG_10 division. Cousins finished as high as eighth place in the floor event, and finished in 16th place in the all-around category in the XG_13 division.

At the 2018 Xcel South States Silver-Diamond competition held on March 9-11, Pierce put together a fourth-place all-around finish. Pierce earned a first-place finish in the floor event, while tying for first in the bars event.
