Millions of dollars are being spent in the race to represent Tracy in Congress.
According to Federal Elections Commission data, Rep. Jeff Denham and Josh Harder have raised a combined $11.5 million in their campaigns for the 10th Congressional District. Harder’s campaign has raised $7.05 million, with $1.4 coming in donations of $200 or less and $1.1 million in donations of $2,000 or more. Denham has raised $4.4 million, with $1.1 million coming in donations of $2,000 or more.
Denham, R-Turlock, has spent $3.2 million of the money he has raised so far, while his Democrat opponent has outspent him by almost 2-to-1, reporting $6.2 million in campaign expenditures.
The FEC also tracks independent spending for and against candidates. Groups supporting Harder — including House Majority PAC, Moveon.org Political Action and We Vote PPAMM Committee — have raised more than $52,000 to help his campaign. Other groups — including the Congressional Leadership Fund and the National Republican Congressional Committee — have raised more than $1.8 million to stop Harder’s election to office.
Two groups, the American Bankers Association and the Humane Society Legislative Fund, report spending more than $77,000 to re-elect Denham, while seven other organizations — including Working America, Center for Voter Information and Bend the Arc Jewish Action Inc. — have raised more than $49,000 to help defeat the congressman.
In the final few days before Election Day, Denham may be able to outspend Harder as his campaign reports having more than $1.5 million cash on hand while the Democrat has $842,000 left in his campaign coffers.
The more than $9.5 million spent in the battle for the 10th Congressional District by the final two candidates is not even the most expensive race in California. More than $17 million — the second most expensive race in America — has been spent between the two remaining candidates in the 20th Congressional District, covering Fresno and Visalia. About $11 million has been spent in the 49th Congressional District in San Diego County and $12.6 million in the 39th Congressional District in Orange and San Bernardino counties.
Both the Denham and Harder campaigns were contacted to comment on this story. Neither returned calls or emails.
A less costly campaign is being waged to represent the 9th Congressional District, which covers Mountain House and a slice of Tracy north of Interstate 205. The two remaining candidates — Rep. Jerry McNerney, D-Stockton, and Marla Livengood — have raised $1.16 million and $70,000 respectively. The McNerney campaign has spent $732,000 to re-elect the congressman while Livengood, a Republican from Lodi, has spent more than $52,000.
