A raid Friday shut down a marijuana dispensary in Banta.
The raid was conducted by elements of the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Department and District Attorney’s Office on a G Street storefront that had been closed for years until very recently.
Newly installed security cameras ringed the building, with two aimed at the front door. The rear door could only be opened with a high-tech keypad.
Though law enforcement officers on the scene would not confirm the type of business or the crime it was suspected of being involved in, multiple Banta residents said the building was a known medical marijuana dispensary — several saying they had shopped there.
On Tuesday, the San Joaquin Sheriff’s Department did confirm that the business was a dispensary but referred all other questions to the D.A.’s office.
Robert Himelblau, spokesperson for the district attorney's office, said Thursday that law enforcement had received complaints from the public about the Banta dispensary which was not only not licensed, it was growing marijuana which is still currently against the law.
"These dispensaries cannot be operating in the unincorporated area of San Joaquin County," Himelblau said.
