The Mountain House boys’ basketball team returned home to record a bounce back 64-29 win over the Pacheco Panthers on Friday after suffering their first Western Athletic Conference (WAC) loss of the season last week.
The Mustangs took care of business against the Panthers despite a relatively slow start to the game. The hosts found themselves trailing by a point at 11-10 after the first eight minutes but responded expertly in the second quarter to gain control of the game.
Junior forward Thurmond Thorpe inspired his team with a huge quarter. Thorpe poured in 11 points in the second frame to give the Mustangs enough separation to pull away for good. The forward finished the game with 15 points.
Junior forward EJ Campbell took the back seat to Thorpe against Pacheco with 13 points. Junior center Gabriel Williams chipped in with 8 points. Senior guard duo of Darion Petty and Lakai Assefa had six points each.
The Mustangs improved to 4-1 in WAC with the win, further solidifying their third place in league standings behind the undefeated Lathrop and Los Banos.
Mountain House has enjoyed a terrific season up to this point, sitting at 15-2 overall and with a couple of tournament wins to their name. Now, the task ahead is to chase the league title.
The Mustangs’ lone league loss of the season so far came at the hands of Los Banos last Wednesday on the road. Head coach Reno Ursal’s troops took a tough 64-61 loss in a very evenly matched contest.
The game came down to the very last possession, leaving Mountain House with plenty of optimism for the future and a rematch at home loading in the near future. Campbell led the way in that one with 22 points and seven boards. Senior guard Isaiah Chenier had a double double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Lathrop is due in town next on Wednesday, Jan. 18.
