Contrary to the popular superstition, the 13th day of January – which just so happened to be a Friday – was a lucky one for the Mountain House boys’ varsity soccer team as they pulled off a 4-3 upset over the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) leading Grace Davis Spartans.
The Mustangs put in a terrific effort on enemy territory and were fueled by a spectacular performance from senior forward Montgomery Carey who scored all four goals to lead the team to victory.
The triple took Carey’s tally on the season to 20 goals and with plenty of soccer still left to play. The forward had the Mustangs up 2-0 at half-time before adding another brace after the interval to help fend off a valiant comeback attempt from the Spartans.
The win was the Mustangs’ second in WAC to take their record to 2-3-2. Mountain House currently sits in fifth place in the league and are well in the fight for a playoff spot.
Three of Montgomery’s goals against Grace Davis were assisted with junior midfielder Dayton Dillman, junior forward Justin Flores, and freshman midfielder Luis Reynoso teeing up their start forward in front of goal. In between the sticks, sophomore goalkeeper Keagan Wright recorded three saves and allowed three goals.
