Tracy High graduate Albert Landeros, Class of 2013, competes this weekend for a state championship as part of the Sacramento City College wrestling team.
Landeros, wrestling in the 133-pound weight class, is one of 12 wrestlers from his team who qualified for Saturday’s California Community College Athletic Association wrestling championships at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo. It’s the second year in a row that Sacramento City College, champion of the Big 8 Conference, has sent its full team to the state championships.
Landeros qualified with his second-place finish at the CCCAA North Championships on Saturday.
In his senior year at Tracy High, Landeros was the champion of the San Joaquin Athletic Association and the Sac-Joaquin Section’s Division IA in the 120-pound class.
Also wrestling Saturday is West graduate Roy Bravo, class of 2013 and a wrestler at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton. He placed fourth in the 149-pound bracket at the North Regional Championship. Bravo was the Tri-City Athletic League champion in his senior year.
Trent Nicholson, Kimball High class of 2014 and a wrestler at Sierra College in Rocklin, placed second in the 141-pound class at the North Regional Championship. Nicholson was the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV and Valley Oak League champion in his senior year.
McNair High Tournament
West High senior Iman Kazem started her season with a gold medal at the McNair High Tournament on Saturday in Stockton.
Kazem, wrestling in the 150-pound girls bracket, won four matches in a row: two by pin in the preliminary rounds and two decisions in the semifinals and championship match.
Wrestling in the same bracket — though she didn’t wrestle Kazem — was Kimball High junior Brittany Rose, who placed fifth. Rose went 4-1 for the day with a win by pin, a loss by pin, and then three wins in a row: two by pin and one by default.
Kimball senior Reese Chew also won gold at the McNair tournament, going 4-0 in the 145-pound varsity boys bracket. Juniors Matthew Jaurique (126) and Kai Caspillo (120) went 3-2 for the day.
